Outside In is awarded a $450,000 federal grant for Medical Clinic

6/6/2005 - Press Release
Contact Kathy Oliver Ph.D., Executive Director, 503.535.3801

The US Department of Health & Human Services has awarded Outside In a major grant to expand medical services for homeless youth and other medically-needy people in Portland. The award of $450,000 per year is on-going, bringing in much-needed federal funds into the state.

Outside In currently turns away 10 to 15 people daily who don't have health insurance, lack the funds to purchase health care, but are in need of medical services. Outside In is a "Safety-Net Clinic" and understands that homeless youth and other individuals need appropriate medical care in order to lead healthy, productive lives.

The grant will expand medical capacity at Outside In's Clinic, allowing for an additional 7,000 clinic visits per year-almost a 50% increase over last year's capacity.

The grant will allow Outside In to expand on-site and outreach health services and capacity. It will fund a medical van allowing us to reach people for whom Outside In is not easily accessible (e.g. Dignity Village). The van will be fully equipped with two exam rooms, a lab area, a pharmacy, and linked to the agency electronic medical record system.

Outside In is a teaching site for Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU), the National College of Naturopathic Medicine (NCNM) and the Oregon College of Oriental Medicine (OCOM). Spanish interpreters are available during all clinic shifts.
